Soak Up Summer

I drive home from visiting a friend in a neighboring community and see in the distance little puffs of color and their silent boom—a reminder of all the small towns we can’t see but know they are there, like part of the landscape. I think of July as a month of traditions: seasonal dishes (recipe included below of my world-famous coleslaw, insert wink here), a vacation spot you always return to, and putting out the American flag to honor those, past and present, who sacrificed to protect our freedoms.

Slices of watermelons on cutting board

And for many, July is the month to get together to enjoy the best elements of summertime: cannonball splashes, still quiet mornings, porch swings, backyard tables, a day at the beach or the local amusement park, shared meals, parades, family reunions that give us time to catch up on people’s busy lives, meet new members, or sit around and just “visit.” In July, the “school’s-out-attitude” grants us the time and permission to play.

So, crack a watermelon, take it outside, and eat with the ones you love!
